How to Pass Your Insurance Physical & Save Big Time

The end of winter often signals a wake-up call when it comes to our health. After months of hearty soups, fuzzy blankets and generally staying indoors, we start to realize that all of that sitting around can wreak havoc on our bodies.

This is never more apparent than when you visit your doctor for an annual physical. If your physical is part of a pre-qualification plan for lower life insurance rates, you’ll want to start planning now so that you can be in the best possible shape. After all, a healthier body and lifestyle can mean lower premium payments—and lower overall health care costs.

One of the most surprising things we’ve learned from consulting with life insurance specialists is that the days and weeks leading up to your exam are of critical importance. We’re not doctors, so none of this is intended to be strict medical advice, but these ideas may help you pass that insurance physical with flying colors.

Eat your greens.

Insurance providers often hike rates for people with higher blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Eating foods that help lower both, such as spinach, kale (the superfood du jour) and broccoli may make a big difference in the quality of your blood work, especially if you eat them in the weeks leading up to your exam.

Drink water.

It’s a no-brainer, but water helps purify your system and may even reduce cravings for fatty foods. Avoiding caffeinated beverages for a few days leading up to your exam may also help, as they can sometimes cause a temporary spike in blood pressure.

Schedule your appointment first thing in the morning.

As mentioned above, a small cup of coffee (yes, even decaf!) can cause your blood pressure to ramp up. You also risk having your cholesterol levels temporarily heightened if you eat pre-appointment. Best to book your appointment early in the morning so you aren’t tempted to sneak a bite or sip before your exam.

Exercising within 24 hours of your exam is verboten.

While daily exercise is generally a great thing for maintaining health, you can give yourself a pass the day before your exam, as exercise can also cause blood pressure to peak. Enjoy your day off; just make sure you don’t pound a cheeseburger while you’re at it.

Ditto for alcohol.

No insurance provider will want to see traces of alcohol in your system. Nix the beer, wine and liquor for at least 24 hours before your exam.

Do your homework.

Part of the exam may consist of the attendant asking you questions about your medical history. It’s important to give truthful answers, and a well-documented, healthy lifestyle can position you as a less risky applicant. Consider bringing a list of all medications you regularly take and any other pertinent medical records (immunization history, previous physical exam results, etc.).

Even the healthiest among us may see their rates hiked if they don’t take the proper precautions in the days and weeks before their exams. Make sure you schedule your physical at a time when you’ll be in control of your time and diet, and take the time to plan ahead. Your body—and your savings—will thank you.
